How can we efficiently acclimatize our homes during winter?

The winter season has been with us for a few weeks now, and with it, a widespread drop in temperatures. With the aim of mitigating its effects, drawing from the experience of TECHNAL and Núñez i Navarro, we offer you some tips to acclimatize our homes in an eco-efficient manner during the coldest months of the year, thus avoiding high energy consumption.

Efficient measures when choosing or renewing your windows:

Having insulating windows is essential if we want to achieve comfort. To get an idea, 25% of the heat escapes through poorly conditioned windows.

• Opt for airtight windows to avoid extra heating consumption as much as possible, and to also reduce heat leakage.
• Choose a sealed glazing based on: the space between the two glass chambers (the larger the chamber, the greater the insulation); the filling of the space between the panes (it can be air or argon gas, which insulates more from the cold) and, finally, the inclusion of low-emissivity glass, which improves thermal insulation by reducing heat transfer.
• Choose the optimal material for the frames according to your needs. Aluminum and wood are excellent solutions for good thermal insulation. They are durable and easy to clean, although wood will require annual maintenance.
• If you opt for PVC, which is highly insulating, keep in mind that it will require steel reinforcement inside to increase its strength.

Sustainable measures to optimize energy efficiency in your home:

• Value eco-efficient heating systems such as aerothermal, photovoltaic energy, or solar thermal, which will result in significant energy savings and a reduction in CO2 emissions.
• When using heating systems, set the thermostat so that the temperature fluctuates between 19 and 21 degrees. A higher temperature can negatively affect our rest and health.
• Take advantage of natural energy. Raise the blinds during the day to let in sunlight and warm the rooms, and lower them once the sun sets to maintain the temperature inside the spaces.
• Air out the house during the hottest hours of the day (10 minutes) to prevent the cooler temperatures from coming in.
• Close the doors of the rooms you are not in. This way, the heat will not disperse throughout the rest of the house.
• Avoid blocking the radiators with clothes or other objects that hinder the diffusion of heat.
• Control the humidity in your home to maintain levels between 40 and 60%. Higher humidity increases the sensation of cold.

Eco-efficient measures for the design of your rooms:

• Avoid placing large furniture in front of radiators, as they will block the heat dispersion; however, it is recommended to place shelves above them if you have high ceilings to concentrate the temperature.
• Choose thick curtains; they keep the temperature inside the home and prevent it from escaping outside.
• Line the walls with cork or fabrics. Use these materials to decorate your rooms with photographs, maps, or mementos that personalize your home.
• Dress your floor with rugs. The floor is the element with the highest energy loss, especially if it's made of wood. For this reason, it is advisable to use textiles that, although not insulating, retain temperature.
• Dress your bed and sofa with wool or flannel blankets, which are fabrics capable of generating heat due to their thermal insulation.
• Incorporate cushions on your bed and sofa, even on the chairs in your living room, as textiles provide warmth to the home and convey a feeling of heat.
